The Cape Girardeau Police Department is proud to announce that its officers worked 135 Driving While Impaired (DWI) cases in 2024; the most since 2017 when the department handled 150 cases. This means 35% of these cases were the result of vehicle crashes marking the lowest percentage since 2018 (32%). According to a news release the trend highlights the Cape Girardeau Police Department’s proactive approach to traffic safety as officers are identifying impaired drivers through regular traffic stops rather than responding to crashes involving impaired drivers.
