A counterfeit bill investigation is underway in Cape Girardeau after fake $100 bills were passed at some businesses on Wednesday. Officers are investigating three instances involving phony bills at businesses at West Park Mall. The first instance was reported at the Shoe Department store. An employee refused to accept a counterfeit bill from a suspect. The suspect then left. Police said the suspect went to Francesca’s, where she bought a $20 gift card using a $100 counterfeit bill. The suspect received $80 in change and went to the next store, American Eagle. the suspect again used a counterfeit $100 bill to buy a $20 gift card.
Police say the suspect was described as a tall woman wearing a light blue jacket and gray leggings.
